General Information

Mount Moreland is an area slightly inland from Umdloti on the coast, and only just over 2kms to the south of Durban’s King Shaka International Airport.  Established in the 1950’s more as an informal settlement, however these days the focus is on the rebuild and rezoning of the area, especially in-line with eco-housing.

Mount Moreland is largely a wetland area bringing forth plenty of opportunities for some excellent animal, plant and bird watching, coupled with brilliant hikes.  Surrounded by natural open spaces, country style living is the primary objective.

Nestled in a conservation area Mount Moreland is mostly known for its important location as the roosting site for the European barn swallow.  Between spring (beginning of September) and end of summer (around February) every year, Mount Moreland becomes the home of approximately three million European barn swallows.

Visitors from all over the country come to this region to experience the sheer delight of seeing so many birds flocking and nesting.  Managed by the Mount Moreland Conservancy, there are picnic areas by the lake where this spectacular occurrence can be best viewed about half an hour before sunset, when they disappear amongst the reeds until dusk the following day.
